Abstract

This study was a qualitative research. The objective of this study was to investigate and collect information about the rice farming background and process in a lake, Ban Pak-Pra community, Lampam Subdistrict, Mueang, District, Phatthalung in order to analyze the potential and the factors affecting the conservation for inheriting the wisdom of farming. The researcher studied data from documents, related researches, and databases and information.  Primary data were collected through conducting field study, survey, observation, and interview of 23 involving people including local farmers in Ban Pak Pra Community during 2013-2014 and involving agencies including Lampam Sub-district Administrative Organization, Phatthalung Rice Research Center and Cultural Office Phatthalung. The results of this study showed as follows:
     1. Ban Pak Pra is an ancient community of farmers located at mouth of a Pak Pra canal, upper area of Songkhla Lake. Historically, farming mainly depended on rainfall. If rainfall fluctuated that did not follow the usual season in some year, rice fields were negatively affected, resulting in low and insufficient productivity. To address this issue, the farmers have tried to sow rice in the lake where muddy soil contains.  Sea level has receded consecutively throughout 4-5 months; from June to October. This is consistent with the growth period of rice crops. It appeared that the rice crop grown in coastal lakes grew very well.  This is also called “Farming in the lake”. Until now, it takes more than a century of this farming practice in the community. There were three phases of its development: 1) At initial period of 1927-1987; local farmers conducted traditional farming practice by depending on labor and simple equipment and devices, native rice varieties. 2) At recession period of 1988-2012, the rice farming in the lake reduced. Many deserted rice fields were found because local farmers shifted to other jobs. The use of native rice varieties was unapparent. 3) At restoring period of 2013-2015, rice farming in the lake had been restored because media pay their attention to the rice farming in the lake and eco-tourism had been promoted.

      2. The farming in lake of Ban Pak-Pra has the unique style due to three areas: 1) geography contributing to the farming in the lake. The area is located at the top of brackish water area. Since during June-September is an early rainy season, freshwater flows from Pak-Pra canal, resulting in sea water in inshore area becomes freshwater. Besides, the blow of soil-borne sediment and beach sediment by wave action makes the soil rich in organic elements, makes the soil incoherent as if the soil prepared for sowing and plowing. Moreover, the rise and fall in saltwater helps blow and decompose rice straw after harvesting to naturally cleanse and nourish the soil. 2) farmers have accumulated body of knowledge of farming and understanding of natural environment at the community very well. 3) products are non-toxic because the soil is fertile, chemical fertilizer does not required. Presently, the rice farming in the lake reduced, has 3 km in this area, but there use to has6 km of farm in the past. Most of local farmers are those aged over 50 years. It is more likely that they lack their successors.

Therefore, the guidelines to inherit the wisdom of farming should begin with local people’s practice, concrete grouping of local farmers in order to drive and encourage other operations including the systematic collection and storage of information about wisdom as a database and knowledge center of the community. This includes the establishment of a learning center for the community as a center for spreading, information exchange, and creating inspiration, local programs promotion in order to convey local wisdom to the next generation. Activities on the lake farming wisdom should be consistently held to create awareness. Organic rice products from lake should be created to expand the role of local wisdom to increase farmers' income. The width and depth of farmland should be expanded. Eco-cultural tourism should be linked with tourist places in Lampamand TalayNoi sub-districts. The activities should be held continually to promote local people’s awareness of value and importance of local wisdom and heritage of the community, leading to sustainable wisdom inheritance.
